the changing table

The only difference between a dresser and a changing table is that a changing table typically comes with a changing tray attachment on top that will hold your changing pad. A dresser will work just fine too, and changing trays are also available on their own so you can add one to any dresser. Dresser + changing pad = changing table. There are also some furniture pieces available that are specifically meant for a changing station only, but I generally don’t recommend those because they aren’t as versatile and you may end up having to buy a dresser down the line anyway.

The standard height for a changing table is around 34 inches, but if you’re not average height, pay attention to the heights when shopping. Measure various surfaces in your home to see what height feels comfortable for you. Also keep in mind that adding a changing tray and pad on top will add a few inches.

A standard contoured changing pad is about 32 inches wide and 16 inches deep, but they can vary. There are also silicone changing pads that don’t require a fabric cover and come in some additional shapes and sizes. Choose your changing pad first so you know what size changing table or dresser to look for. Also, if space and budget allow, opt for a dresser that’s a bit wider so you have extra table top space for a diaper organizer, lamp, or a place to set things down while changing.
